very loud explosions all around us tonight as israeli missiles land. we've also heard the distinct whoosh of outgoing rockets as hamas and other militant groups return fire. tonight, it seems this burst of violence is only getting worse. all day long, rockets filled the bright blue sky, gaza militants firing on israel. at least one rocket landed tonight in tel aviv, israel's commercial capital. sirens blared as residents hit the ground. three israelis were killed earlier when a rocket hit their apartment in the south. this as israeli warplanes pounded the gaza strip. its target? militant groups, most notably, hamas. but caught in the cross-fire, at least 12 civilians, including that 11-month-old boy. "what did my son do to die like this," his father cried. this is what the aftermath of one of these strikes looks like. a massive crater filled with cinderblock and rebar, the strong smell of diesel fuel, several of the houses around were damaged very badly. and the residents here on this street tell us they hope hamas and the other groups keep firing rockets into israel in retaliation

'm christine romans. a painful election is behind us. now the hard work begins. creating middle class jobs. it used to be a ticket to the middle class was by making things. but what are we making these days, and where is the middle? take a minute to look around your living room. your tv, the jaens you're wearing, the lamp next to you, all of those things likely aren't made in the usa. it's a trend, of course, long in the making but made worse by the great recession. when more than 2 million manufacturing jobs were lost. since june 2009 when the recession ended, just 241,000-of-those manufacturing jobs have come back. that's according to government data. for years, for years, conventional wisdom was we don't need to make stuff here. we'll invent it in america and then become a service-based economy. well, here we are, and these new service sector jobs aren't paying off, literally. right now a job in the leisure and hospitality sector averages $13 an hour. that's $27,000 a year, if you work full-time. retail, not much better. average hourly rate, about $16 an hour. this is the average. it ta

've got chuck todd joining us and howard fineman. i have to give you some anecdotal information which has given me good information. i have a brother charlie who always votes for the winner. he called me an hour ago and said it's obama. because that's who he's going to vote for. don't laugh, chuck. when you get an absolute provable leading indicator you will never let it go either. so i've got one. i've looked at all the numbers today. all the numbers seem to point to a mild victory for obama. none seem to point for a victory for romney. what do you know so far? >> i can tell you the body language of the campaign, talking to the two campaigns. the obama folks don't think they're trailing in a single battleground state and this is the day before the election. that's not to say they think they win every one of the nine battlegrounds if you include north carolina in that larger nine. that's how confident they are. that's how much they believe that they have done enough of what i would call the building the flood walls, if you will, with the early vote and the absentee. and what their turn in

is over. but first this here. new information just in to us at cnn. two iranian fighter jets fired at an unarmed u.s. predator drone. we're hearing it happened last week. barbara starr is at the pentagon for us with this exclusive report. barbara, tell us what you know. >> reporter: new military tensions now with iran. cnn has learned it was last thursday just one week ago that two iranian su-25, old russian fighter jets they operate flew out in to the persian gulf in to international air space and fired on a u.s. air force predator drone, an unmanned drone in international air space that the pentagon insists conducting routine all toe classified maritime surveillance. the iranian air force hit the drone. the drone was able to return to base in that region. but this does raise some serious new tensions with iran. it was, of course, just a few days before the presidential election. here in the united states. officials that we have talked to confirming it after we questioned them say they just don't know at this point what the iranians were up to. just out to cause trouble or trying
